In this guide
A good collision repair shop comes down to concrete criteria: a transparent estimate, direct coordination with your insurer, a warranty on eligible repairs, the right equipment for recent vehicles (including recalibration of driver-assistance systems) and a courtesy vehicle during repairs. And even when an insurer recommends a repair shop, you generally keep the choice of where your vehicle is repaired.
After a collision or a fender bender, you have to trust someone with your vehicle. Here are the criteria that actually matter when choosing a collision repair shop, and the questions to ask before handing over your keys.
Insurer recommendation or your choice
Even when an insurer recommends a repair shop, you generally keep the choice of where your vehicle is repaired. Recommended shop networks exist to simplify coordination: the insurer knows the shop, the back-and-forth is well established and the claim moves along more smoothly. It is a useful starting point, not an obligation in most cases.
If you already have a shop you trust, tell your insurer as soon as you open your claim. To understand what happens next, our guide How an auto insurance claim works walks through the steps one by one, and our Insurance and claims page explains what we can coordinate for you.
Questions to ask the shop
A good shop answers these questions without dodging. Take two minutes on the phone or at the counter to ask them:
- The warranty: what is covered on the repairs, and for how long?
- The parts: which parts will be used, and how is that decided with the insurer?
- The timelines: how are they explained and communicated? A serious shop gives you the straight story as things progress, rather than a promise made before even seeing the vehicle.
- The courtesy vehicle: can a vehicle be loaned to you during the repairs, and under what conditions?
- Insurer coordination: does the shop deal directly with your insurer, or are you the go-between?
- Recalibration: if your vehicle has driver-assistance systems, is recalibration done, and where?
Experience and affiliations
Affiliations with networks like CarrXpert (collision repair) or VitrXpert (glass) mean something concrete: the shop follows repair standards set by the network, and eligible repairs are backed by a network warranty, not just the shop’s word.
Experience matters too. Beaucage Carrossier has been repairing vehicles since 1997 in Sherbrooke, and also in Granby since 2011. A shop that lasts through the years has had time to build its methods, its teams and its working relationship with insurers.
The estimate process
Everything starts with an inspection of the vehicle. The shop documents the damage (photos, a list of affected parts) and prepares a detailed estimate that becomes the basis of the claim with your insurer. How long the inspection and the repairs take depends on the damage: be wary of timelines promised before anyone has even seen the vehicle.
What you can expect is the straight story: a clear explanation of what needs to be repaired and why, and updates when things change. That is how we work in collision repair.
Coordinating with your insurer
The claim is often the heaviest part for the customer: calls, documents, follow-ups. A good shop can communicate directly with your insurer for the estimate, the repair authorization and the follow-up on your file, so you are not running back and forth between the two.
At Beaucage Carrossier, we work with most insurers in Quebec and we are a member of several of their recognized networks, which makes coordination easier. Terms vary depending on your coverage and your claim: the details are on our Insurance and claims page.
The courtesy vehicle
While your vehicle is in the shop, life goes on: work, school, groceries. Ask whether a courtesy vehicle can be loaned to you, and under what conditions. At Beaucage Carrossier, a fleet of 80 courtesy vehicles serves both our locations; a vehicle is loaned to you subject to availability and the eligibility of your file. Bring it up on the very first call.
The warranty on repairs
A collision repair should last. Before handing over your vehicle, ask what the warranty covers and for how long, and ask where that is put in writing.
At Beaucage Carrossier, eligible collision repairs are covered by the CarrXpert warranty, the warranty of the network we belong to. Ask us what applies to your repair: we explain it before we start.
ADAS recalibration
Recent vehicles are packed with driver-assistance systems: emergency braking, lane keeping, adaptive cruise control. Their cameras and sensors are often mounted on the windshield or the body. After a windshield replacement or a repair in those areas, recalibration may be required so those systems keep seeing the road correctly.
It is a question to ask before choosing your shop: is recalibration done, and where? When required, recalibration of driver-assistance systems is done directly at Beaucage Carrossier. Our Windshield and glass page explains the service.
Quality control
Before the keys are handed back, the shop should check its own work: panel alignment, paint match, replaced parts working properly, a clean vehicle. Ask how that check is done. A proper handover also includes a walkaround with you: you look at the result, you ask your questions, and you leave when you are satisfied.
Signs you can trust a shop
Beyond the technical questions, a few simple signals help you size up a shop:
- Real Google reviews: read the recent comments, not just the rating, and look at how the shop responds to unhappy customers.
- Transparency: clear answers about the warranty, the parts and the process, with no pressure to sign.
- Communication: do they call you back when they say they will? The first contact often sets the tone for the rest.
- A clean shop: a tidy workplace says a lot about the care given to the vehicles.
You can read the reviews for our Sherbrooke and Granby locations and judge for yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to go to the shop my insurer recommends?
Even when an insurer recommends a repair shop, you generally keep the choice of where your vehicle is repaired. The recommendation simplifies coordination, but if you prefer another shop, tell your insurer as soon as you open your claim and confirm the terms of your contract with them.
How long do collision repairs take?
It depends on the damage, the parts to order and the insurer’s authorization. A good shop won’t promise you a timeline before inspecting the vehicle: it explains the steps instead, and keeps you posted as your file moves along.
How do I book an appointment at Beaucage Carrossier?
